Cocaine Quality about to drop in Des Moines; Don't Call me ADDICT! Call me MR ADDICT!

I've never been to Des Moines,  and now that the word is out that it is the Cocaine capitol of the USA you can believe the quality will drop and there will be plenty of bunk on the street. I live in Los Angeles, and it isn't a VICE CAPITOL at all, unless you consider sit-coms a vice.
This weeks edition tells you all the hot vice cities, the latest about our REEL RECOVERY FILM FESTIVALS, what celebrity is sober/relapsing this week, and more evidence that calling people suffering from Substance Use Disorder (aka Junkie, Crack Head, Pot Head, etc) by their more traditional insult-names such as ADDICT and ALCOHOLIC makes things worse. Hey, you dont refer to people fighting cancer as a "CANCER" unless you are talking astrology -- a science so precise it is  used for finding hidden Unicorn treasures..

Our fearless leader, Leonard Lee Buschel is celebrating 20 years of being neurotic without the aid of drugs and alcohol. Imagine his relief at discovering that he needn't spend all that money to be the best he can be -- and he keeps getting better and better!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEONARD~

People Are Not Their Diseases
It's Time to Stop Calling Them Alcoholics
and Addicts
by Dr. Neil Capretto
Society has moved away from these words because they are pejorative, harmful and inflict pain. The same applies to words such as "alcoholic," "drunk," "addict" and "junky." Such words stigmatize those who are diagnosed with a disease, creating a barrier to treatment. People are not their disease. By using "people-first" language we identify a person with an illness rather than a person whose identity is dictated by an illness and we promote respect for the worth and dignity of all people.

Drink Alcohol? Signs of Drinking Too Much
Not all people who are alcohol abusers go on to drink their way to full-blown alcoholism, but it is a risk. Sometimes it develops suddenly after a stressful life change. Other times it begins gradually as a person's tolerance to alcohol increases.

Shia LaBeouf's run-in with the law has inspired him to seek professional help. He's also getting help from someone else who wasn't mentioned in the original reports. TMZ reports that the actor has been getting help from Brad Pitt for his issues with alcoholism. Although Pitt isn't directly helping him, the tabloid site says he didn't want to risk embarrassing his co-star in the upcoming war film, "Fury."

Do 12-Step Programs Really Work? with Dr. Adi Jaffe AUDIO
Dr. Adi Jaffe, discusses the success rate of AA and other 12-step programs, as well as if it is the best option and what other treatment options are available for the type of treatment you're seeking.  Another reason why the 12-step program might fail is its faith-based principles. Some people have a hard time agreeing to this and "letting go" to a higher power.

BOOK REVIEW: Slaying the Dragon
What It Was Really Like -  AA History from Bill White
Those among us having a fondness for history are accustomed to being transported to the past, and Mr. White does this deliciously in the second edition of Slaying the Dragon: The History of Addiction Treatment and Recovery in America.Although this book is primarily directed toward the members of the professional community who encounter addiction in the performance of their service roles, this volume is far too interesting not to be in the possession of EVERY moderately erudite alcoholic and addict.

You Are Not Your Addiction: 5 Ways to Beat the Stigma of Substance Abuse Disorders
But just because you've spent time in a drug and alcohol rehab center doesn't mean you have to live with the stigma of addiction forever. Just by getting sober and staying sober, you are living proof that the negative stereotypes passed around about addicts and alcoholics simply aren't true.

Pensioners Prefer Pernod
One in Five Over Age 65 Drink Every Day
One in five pensioners drink alcohol at home every single day, new research has revealed. While public perception has often focused on drinking issues among the young, a new report reveals that alcoholism among older people is an increasing concern. The study found the over 65s were much more likely to drink every day than those aged between 18 and 24.

Fearing that her family and neighbors in Mahwah would label Gabriel a drug addict, Davis told everyone that his death in January 2014 was caused by a mysterious infection. These Are The Sex, Drug, And Gambling Capitals
of America
Cities won't be adding these credits to their tourism brochures. It probably won't come as a surprise that Las Vegas is the gambling capital of the U.S., but new research suggests more unassuming cities do some brisk trade in vices, too.
Community Doesn't Always = Fellowship
Sober House Owners Want to Help Police Facilities
In places across the country, a lack of state or federal restrictions for owners of sober living has contributed to regrettable outcomes. Deaths in some of the city's sober homes-the most recent one in May-may thrust some residential recovery facilities and owners into the spotlight for the wrong reasons. At the least, the group is looking to improve the quality of life and safety for recovering addicts transitioning back into mainstream society following deaths that cast aspersions on the local recovery housing industry.

According to the Daily Mail, Frank stopped short of publishing Hillary's comments at the time because of the media frenzy that already surrounded the Lewinsky affair. "He was abused. A Nation Gone Mad
A Mother's Plea: Our Community's in Crisis; Addicts Need Help,
Not Prisons
The current trend in our country of criminalizing drug use and possession is doing nothing to curb drug use. We are the nation with the highest rate of drug offenders in a time that other countries' rates are declining. Addiction doesn't discriminate. It can happen to anyone's family. Chances are you know at least one person in your life who is struggling, now. Yesterday it was my son. Will it be yours, tomorrow?

Sober Is The
New Black
A quick scan of the pop-culture landscape shows a collection of sober, serious operators-Rufus Wainwright, Tobey Maguire, Jason Bateman, Russell Brand, Marc Jacobs, Terry Richardson (best known for his photographs of hard-living luminaries), and the recently resurgent Colin Farrell (who has made being dry "a way of life" after giving up a weekly diet of "20 E's, 4 grams of coke, 6 of speed, half an ounce of hash, 3 bottles of Jack Daniel's, 12 bottles of red wine, 60 pints").

New York Times: Repeal Prohibition Again
It took 13 years for the United States to come to its senses and end Prohibition, 13 years in which people kept drinking, otherwise law-abiding citizens became criminals and crime syndicates arose and flourished. It has been more than 40 years since Congress passed the current ban on marijuana, inflicting great harm on society just to prohibit a substance far less dangerous than alcohol.
Business As Usual
Rich Urban Mom Addicts Get Sobriety Coaches; Poor Moms Get Jail
In America, addiction is judged through the lens of class. Sobriety coaches rake in big bucks to keep 1 percenters off their substance of choice. A-listers are so busy, after all, and treatment centers are both time-consuming and detrimental to privacy. Even when the wealthy do benefit from these centers, their newfound sobriety often doesn't outlast the first weekend home alone.

Hashish addict Noor Rehman has spent three years chained to a concrete slab covered by insects. Beaten and malnourished, he lost his eyesight in a "clinic" run by a local cleric claiming to cure addicts who were kept against their will. The clinic's methods fall on the more extreme end of the spectrum - even for Pakistan - but offers some insight into how the country deals with the subject of drug addiction.

Fish Oil May Help Reduce Effects of Alcohol Abuse
This research strongly suggests that fish oil may have a protective effect in the brain. Research on rats doesn't always pan out, since rat brains aren't identical to human ones, but previous research has found that DHA can reduce inflammation in the body. Researchers have also uncovered numerous brain benefits to taking DHA, including better brain development in babies and a reduced risk of Alzheimer's in adults.
